90 people in Indonesia injured in line for BlackBerry Bold 9790

A crowd of over 1,000 people mobbed an Indonesian mall for a chance to buy a half priced BlackBerry 9790. Over 90 people passed out in the mob, and at least three people suffered broken bones.

If you thought local Black Friday deals were good, you need to go to Indonesia. A crowd of over 1,000 people formed outside an Indonesian mall on Friday for a sale on the newly released BlackBerry 9790, pictured on the left above. The phone that retails for around $520 was available at half price.

Customers had been in line since 4 pm the day before waiting for the sale to start. Rumors started spreading throughout the massive crowd that there wasn’t enough phones for everyone in line so they started to get a little rowdy. The crowd pushed through a barricade which caused at least 90 people to pass out and three people to suffer broken bones. It took 200 police officers and security guards to restore order to the mob.  Three people were rushed to the hospital for treatment to their injuries.

While it might be a little surprising for us here in the U.S. but BlackBerry is by far the most popular phone maker in Indonesia. Four of the top five selling phones are made by BlackBerry. Combine the insane popularity of the device with a half off discount on a recently released device and this sort of situation is predictable.

Local police said that BlackBerry officials will be questioned for failure to provide a safe environment for the sale. The police were not informed by BlackBerry prior to the event, and say that if they were they would have been able to control the situation.

After the initial mob was dispersed phones went back on sale for a short time until ultimately the sale was shut down prematurely.  There is no word as of right now if other retailers will attempt a similar promotion, but Indonesians should be able to buy the 9790 at any of their local BlackBerry retailers starting tomorrow.

Bendy snake-arm robot piques interest of multiple industries

A unique snake-arm robot developed by engineers in the UK has come to the attention of many industries, including both the airline and nuclear sectors. The bendy robot can perform a wide variety of tasks and explore confined spaces or places deemed too dangerous for humans to enter.

Engineers at a robotics design firm in Bristol, UK have come up with a unique snake-like machine that wouldn’t look out of place in a big budget sci-fi movie.

Developed by OC Robotics, engineers have been working on the revolutionary bendy robot, known as the snake-arm, for the last 10 years. The result is a remarkable piece of technology that can, according to its designers, “reach the unreachable.”

Industries around the world have been showing an interest in the snake-arm, including the nuclear sector, where the robot could be sent into confined spaces or into places too dangerous for humans.

OC Robotics’ managing director, Rob Buckingham, spoke to CNN about the development of the snake-arm. “Just like the human arm, the big muscles that drive them are actually mounted on the back and tendons link the muscles to the joints.”

He continued, “Basically, we’ve taken that principle to an extreme and use wire ropes as tendons and all the motors (actuators) that control the arm are at the base of the robot.”

The snake-arm is a wonderfully versatile piece of kit as it allows tools such as video cameras, lights, tack welding, cutting, gripping and swabbing gear to be fitted to its tip.

Operation is straightforward enough, with a person using only a computer screen and a control pad. The company has even put up a simulator on its website so that you can get some idea of what it’s like to control the snake-arm.

The robot has already been used at nuclear facilities in Sweden and Canada. Its makers have also offered it to the operators of the stricken nuclear power plant in Fukushima in Japan although they’re still awaiting a response.

Recent interest has come from the airline industry with both Airbus and Boeing examining how the snake-arm might be used during the manufacture of wings and fuselages.

The US and UK military has also asked for demonstrations of the innovative robot. And if there is a Hollywood director out there who finds out about it, presumably it could be used in a sci-fi movie too.

World’s first pee-controlled video game opens in London bar

A bar in London has become the first in the world to offer pee-controlled video games in its bathroom. Taking a leak will never be the same again.

In most pubs and bars, going for a pee involves just that – emptying your bladder, washing your hands and returning to your table. However, take a pee in The Exhibit bar in south London and you’ll have an altogether different experience.

You see, The Exhibit has taken it upon itself to install in its men’s bathroom a number of pee-controlled video games; games with carefully thought up names such as Clever Dick and On The Piste. The system is thought to be the first of its kind in the world, and besides making a trip to the bathroom more entertaining, it will also be an opportunity for advertisers to promote their products.

Developed by UK-based Captive Media, the high-tech urinals come with 12-inch LCD screens fitted just above them. Ads play on the screens until a punter approaches the urinal. Detecting that the punter is in position and ready to pee, the system then switches into gaming mode.

“Sophisticated algorithms then allow the user to do something simple, but VERY engaging – controlling the system just by aiming their stream left or right!” the blurb says on Captive Media’s website. So with the skiing game, you’re able to navigate the course with some subtle but deft movements. How well you do at the game is entirely in your hands, so to speak.

The pee-controlled urinals are the brainchild of Gordon MacSween, a man who is effectively paid too pee. “We tend to drink a lot of water so that we can test the product more often,” he told London’s Time Out magazine.

MacSween said that when the system was trialed at a bar in Cambridge recently, a couple of behavioral changes among the peeing public were noted. “There has been less mess, which we sort of expected because we designed the game so you’re not splashing about, and less vandalism,” he explained.

“When we put it in, people thought it’d be ripped off the wall within a week, but it’s still there after four months. Because people are having a laugh, there’s a lot less vandalism. People just tend to get less angry.”

At one point MacSween was baffled by players’ ability to achieve scores far above anything he ever got. After talking to some customers, he found out why. “It turns out people were learning how to stop and start (their pee flow) to get higher scores.” So if you ever find yourself peeing for points, you know exactly what to do.

The Exhibit bar opened its new bathroom on Friday. It’s quite possible that for the first time ever in a UK drinking establishment, there’ll be more people lining up for the bathroom than for a drink.

It’s not known what, if anything, Captive Media has planned for the women’s bathroom.

Why a Facebook phone is doomed to be the next Zune

As HTC and Facebook pursue building a phone together, they both risk alienating far more important partners – a lesson they should have picked up from Microsoft’s Zune fiasco.

In the list of bad ideas, the rumored “Facebook phone” (which will apparently be built by HTC and may fork the Android code base) is arguably one of the worst ideas since… well, the Zune. Let’s explore that today by looking at some of Microsoft’s own missteps with the ill-fated PMP, and where Facebook and HTC seem to be repeating them.

Zune

To recap the history of the Zune, Microsoft made three massively strategic mistakes over the last three decades. The first mistake Microsoft made was to build the Zune MP3 player. The company started off in media players by helping create the “Plays for Sure” platform with hardware partners like SanDisk and Samsung. One of the things partners are often afraid of in this situation is the platform creator becoming too powerful and effectively replacing them altogether, which is effectively what Microsoft did by creating the Zune MP3 player. In effect, (though I doubt it thought this through at the time), Microsoft could have helped lay the groundwork for Android. The other two similar mistakes were the original Xbox and the Kin phone, in my opinion.

You never want to put yourself at odds with your key revenue source and sow seeds of distrust, but the Zune did that with partners. It was also a colossal failure at the same time, which upset retailers and made them lose their trust in Microsoft.

How did Microsoft arrive at the decision to make the Zune? By looking out at the “Plays for Sure” partners and concluding they were all idiots because not a single one had come up with anything as popular as the Apple iPod. Yet the Zune failed massively, suggesting a good chunk of the reason for that was not (as Microsoft assumed) the partners’ fault, but Microsoft’s own lack of resources to the effort.

Arguably, the Zune is one of the most expensive failures that Microsoft has ever had, all because it betrayed its partners and then under-resourced the effort. What a waste.

Facebook Phone

Facebook isn’t in Microsoft’s business, so its mistake isn’t identical, but it’s also massively counter-strategic (in this case more for HTC than for Facebook). You see, HTC is on the other side of the Zune problem. Just as Microsoft lost trust from its hardware partners, an OEM like HTC stepping out against their software partner should have the same kind of collateral damage.

In this case, HTC has strong relationships with both Google for Android and Microsoft for Windows Phone 7. One of the key standout features for Windows Phone 7 is social networking and in particular, Facebook integration (Facebook and Microsoft are partnered). Google, on the other hand, is at war with Facebook with Google+, and monetizes Android after-the-fact with services like Google+. On paper, Android’s connection to Google services is what makes it works. (I could argue that economically this actually doesn’t work, because by competing with Apple and Microsoft, Google lost more than they gained… but we’ll save that for another time.)

So, HTC taking Android and possibly forking it (effectively denying Google at least some of the revenue and breaking the hard connection to Google+) would really upset Google. Meanwhile, taking Android to build a Facebook phone rather than a Windows Phone 7 would really upset Microsoft. In effect, both Microsoft and Google could put HTC in the doghouse at once, making the other phone makers really happy. Samsung, the company that has never met an OS it didn’t like, is thinking of doing one of these as well, which should alone, be a red flag for everyone else.

Then we look at Facebook. Is it really going to be able to promote a piece of hardware? Does it really want to go to war with Apple and every other device manufacturer? Right now Apple, Microsoft and others spend lots of time on Facebook, but they aren’t likely to continue if they view Facebook as a potential competitor.

Facebook should be focused on building the best Facebook app for every major platform. Going into competition with these platforms and phone providers could alone turn them into the next Netscape. This may partially explain why Microsoft is thinking of building its own social network all of a sudden.

Opportunity cost and collateral damage

What the hell goes through executives’ minds when they make mistakes like the Zune, Kin, and this foolish Facebook phone?

They’re dreaming of the upside of being the next Apple, without considering the collateral damage and opportunity cost that is more likely to make them the next Netscape. The reason for this is that they apparently are hardwired to fail. This post suggests that decisions like this come out of a need to assure status at all costs. Sounds whacked, until you read the post. But for me, I think a Facebook phone is just plain stupid.

Leaked images and tech specs reveal that Motorola is just about ready to release the Droid 4, which will be able to access Verizon's 4G LTE network.

It’s really okay if you can’t keep track of Motorola‘s many flavors of Droid phone anymore. Four have been released this year alone: the Droid X2, Droid 3, Droid Bionic and Droid RAZR. Get ready to add a fifth to the pile too, as the Droid 4 has been revealed, detailed and tentatively dated for a late 2011 release.

The news comes by way of leaked info and specs obtained by Droid Life. It looks like the plan right now is to release the Droid 4 on Verizon on December 8, though consider that nothing more than a rumor until the company officially confirms it.

The device itself is very much real, however, as you can see in the images above. It’s like a mash-up of the Droid 3 and the RAZR, with a 1.2 GHz dual-core processor, 1 GB of RAM, a 4-inch screen and a slide-out QWERTY keyboard. There’s one notable difference, however, and it’s the one that Droid fans have been waiting for: 4G connectivity. The Droid brings you your data at a blazing fast rate thanks to its ability to make use of Verizon’s 4G LTE network. Stay tuned for further details, like price and a confirmed release date, once the official announcements roll in.

Apple receives 4-inch display shipments from Hitachi and Sony for 2012 iOS device

Apple reportedly receives shipments of 4-inch LCD screens from Hitachi and Sony for an unnamed iOS device that is due sometime in 2012.

With the iPhone 4S out of the way, it doesn’t take a brilliant mind to deduce that Apple‘s tech tinkerers have shifted their focus to the iPhone 5. Could reports of the company receiving shipments of 4-inch LCD screens from Hitachi and Sony be connected to that?

The news comes from macotakara.jp (via AppleInsider), which cites sources in Apple’s “Far Eastern supply chain.” The alleged shipments are coming from Hitachi Displays, Ltd. and Sony Mobile Display Corportaion for an unnamed iOS device being released in 2012. Hitachi and Sony are also expected to be linking up with Toshiba Mobile Display Co. in the spring of 2012 to form Japan Display.

Given the timing and the previous talk of the iPhone 5 sporting a 4-inch display, Apple’s next-gen cellphone seems a very likely recipient for these 4-inch LCDs.

RIM now offering PlayBook as a freebie: whatever next?

In a deal that will see people receiving the tablet even if they don't particularly want it, Research In Motion is now giving away a free PlayBook to buyers of the latest version of its BlackBerry Enterprise Server software. It's the latest move by RIM in its attempt to get its troubled tablet into the hands of users.

When we say Research In Motion (RIM) is now giving away its struggling PlayBook tablet for free, we don’t mean that Mike Lazaridis has taken to standing outside his office in Waterloo, Ontario handing out the device to passers-by (no, it hasn’t quite come to that).

The latest offer is aimed at business users, and sees RIM throwing in a free 16GB PlayBook for anyone that upgrades to RIM’s BlackBerry Enterprise Server (BES) v5 between now and the end of December. BES is mobile management server software designed to increase mobile worker productivity and reduce the burden on help desks.

The move is the latest in a string of offers and incentives from the Canadian maker of the beleaguered tablet to try to get it off the store shelves and into houses and offices.

Earlier in the week Best Buy slashed the price of the PlayBook to $199 from $399 for the holiday season, while late last month RIM began running a buy-two-get-one-free campaign for business users.

Back in September it started offering the tablet to employees of Canadian cell phone carrier and long-time business partner Rogers with a discount of as much as 50 percent. It’s not known how many took up the offer.

It’s fair to say that as far as the PlayBook is concerned, it looks grim for RIM. On its launch in April, the reviews were largely underwhelming and anyway, consumers couldn’t keep their eyes off Apple’s iPad.

The PlayBook’s lack of native email, messaging and calendar apps mystified many of those who had been looking forward to the tablet’s release. A long-awaited OS update to rectify the issue was supposed to become available recently, but won’t now appear until early next year.

These and other issues have resulted in the company shipping just 200,000 units in its most recent quarter, a drop in the ocean compared to sales of the iPad, which numbered in the region of 11 million in Apple’s most recent quarter.

Displair aims to make science fiction science fact with Minority Report style gesture controls

Russian company Displair has developed a Kinect and Minority Report inspired gesture control system, which utilizes fog and infrared beams to capture images in thin air.

It’s been a little over a year now since Microsoft launched the Kinect (originally known by the code name Project Natal) to a great deal of success. Microsoft has gone on to sell over 10 million units of the Kinect sensor, earning the crown of “fastest selling consumer electronics device” in the process. With the Kinect being so popular and successful, it is little wonder that the device has spurred developers around the world to find innovative and new ways to harness similar technology with either the aid of Microsoft’s device or by taking inspiration from it.

In fact, ever since Microsoft released its non-commercial Kinect software development kit (SDK) in February of 2011 (and to be truthful, before that as well) the development community has been abuzz with numerous and creative ways to modify the Kinect to perform a host of new and exciting applications.

Now Russian company Displair is also touting its own award-winning technology that projects images into thin air, a la Tom Cruise in Minority Report, the key difference being that while the technology from the film isn’t real, the prototype and software developed by Desplair is.

How does it work, though? Essentially, the company uses a stream of cold fog to project images and an infrared camera to capture gestures. Similar to the Kinect, Displair captures your body movements only with much more precision and more intricate levels of movement, especially in regards to hand gestures —  something Microsoft’s Kinect has trouble with at times.

Amazingly, the technology developed by Displair was done so by a young student in a dorm, which may or may not have earned the talented learner some extra credit.

Of course Displair is still very much a prototype and in its development stages, which sadly translates to this technology not being available or ready for mass production quite yet. Unfortunately, costs for the innovative gesture technology still ranges between $4,000 and $30,000.

It seems like for now we may just have to stick with our Kinects, but truth be told it’s always exciting to see sci-fi-like technology coming closer to fruition.

Kyobo eReader sports Qualcomm mirasol display

South Korea's Kyobo Book Centre is launching the Kyobo eReader, with a battery-sipping, full-color display using Qualcomm mirasol technology fast enough for video.

Like many other booksellers around the world, South Korea’s Kyobo Book Centre (Korean) is entering the ereader market with its new Kyobo eReader, and a 5.7-inch XGA display, battery life measured in weeks, Google’s Android under the hood, and (not surprising for the Korean market) an emphasis on Korean content. However, the Kyobo eReader has one feature that makes it absolutely unique on the planet: it uses a 5.7-inch XGA mirasol display from Qualcomm, a technology that combines the long battery possibilities of E Ink displays with a full color output and response times that let the display handle animated and video content. And, yes, it’s readable in full sunlight.

“The Kyobo e-Reader brings the user a true book reading experience,” said Kyobo Book Centre CEO Mr. Seong-Ryong Kim, in a statement. “With our diverse content and leading edge technology from Qualcomm, Kyobo Book Centre will provide a premium reading experience to our customers.”

Mirasol displays operate using a principle similar to the phenomena that enables a peacock’s feathers to shift between colors in different light: basically, the display minutely controls the distance between a membrane and a reflective glass surface, and the distance between them either blocks light or amplifies particular frequencies, causing the membrane to appear transparent, black, or a particular colors. Qualcomm’s mirasol display layer three of these together to create a full color red, green, and blue display. The displays only consume power then they’re moving the membranes around, and they move them fast: they only have to move a few hundred nanometers to change color, enabling them to respond fast enough to handle video. The mirasol display actually gets brighter (rather than washed out) in bright light, and for use in dim places Qualcomm includes a front-light LED system that mimics sunlight.

The Kyobo eReader isn’t the first device with a mirasol display: they’re on a few Asian phones, a a handful of media devices have used small versions of the displays. However, the Kyobo eReader is the first ereader to adopt the technology—the 5.7-inch display has a native resolution of 1,024 by 768 pixels——and since it runs Android 2.3 Gingerbread, it may appeal to Android fans looking for a little something different. The mirasol display offers very long battery life compared to the LCDs in typical tablets—Kyobo says the device will run for “weeks” with 30 minutes reading time a day and the front light set to 25 percent. The device also features a 1 GHz Qualcomm SnapDragon processor, multitouch touchscreen, and Wi-Fi connectivity—although users will need to turn Wi-Fi off to get maximum battery life. The Kyobo ereader will also feature English-language text-to-speech capabilities and the Diotek dictionary application.

The Kyobo eReader is available now in South Korea for a suggested retail price of KRW349,000—that’s about US$310, but Kyobo Platinum Book Club members can get the device for KRW299,000 (about US$265). There’s no word yet on whether Kyobo intends to market the device in countries outside Korea.

Samsung, Google confirm Galaxy Nexus volume bug

It's the first phone to run Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, and Google and Samsung have confirmed it's got a bug that randomly drops the handset volume.

The Samsung Galaxy Nexus is the first phone to ship with Android 4.0 “Ice Cream Sandwich” pre-installed as its operating system—and it’s coming to Verizon Wireless next month—but early customers in Europe have been reporting problems with the phone’s volume level: the device’s audio volume will drop to nothing for seemingly no reason, after which the device’s hardware volume controls become unresponsive. Early Galaxy Nexus customers have been flooding user support forums over the issue, and now both Samsung and Google have confirmed that they’re aware of the problem—and a fix should be coming soon.

“Regarding the Galaxy Nexus, we are aware of the volume issue and have developed a fix,” Samsung UK said in a statement. “We will update devices as soon as possible.”

Google released a nearly identical statement.

The bug is particularly problematic for listening to music or using other media, or relying on alarms or other audio alerts.

Neither company elaborated on the cause of the problem—debate has been raging whether it is in hardware or software—or detailed when a fix might be available. Some retailers have promised customers a fix will be available before the end of the month, although it’s not clear they have any concrete information on which to base those reassurances.

Speculation from hardware-savvy members of the Android community (like this one from Lee Johnston) seems to have centered on radio interference as the cause of the problem, with Google’s “fix” for the device basically amounting to increasing the threshold for what the device consideres to be user input on the volume controls, rather then random fluctuations caused by EM interference.

Robotic guards coming to South Korean prisons

A prison in South Korea is set to trial robotic guards. Fortunately for the prisoners, the robots have been designed to be "humane and friendly" as opposed to harsh weapon-wielding disciplinarians.

Guards in a South Korean prison will soon be introduced to some new colleagues – 150cm-tall robots on wheels.

In the latest example demonstrating the country’s interest in robotic technology, the robots will be put to work in a prison in the city of Pohang, located southeast of the capital of Seoul, from March next year. If the month-long trial is successful, more prison guards may be turning up to work alongside robots in the near future.

A group of scientists, who developed the robots in cooperation with the country’s justice ministry, spent a billion won ($850,000) developing the robotic prison guard, which is supposed to enable its human counterparts to concentrate more on rehabilitation work with offenders.

The robots, which will be used mainly at night, will patrol the prison on the lookout for suspicious behavior among prisoners. Sensors on the robot will be able to study conditions in the cells and report back to the officer in charge – presumably a human one.

Speaking to the Wall Street Journal about the robotic guards, project leader Professor Lee Baik-chul of Kyonggi University said, “Unlike CCTV that just monitors cells through screens, the robots are programmed to analyze various activities of those in prison and identify abnormal behavior.”

Lee said that prison officers are happy about the plan to bring in robots as it should help reduce their workload on the night shift.

Inmates, on the other hand, were more cautious about the idea and asked for reassurance about their role. Presumably they were worried the robots might be heavy-handed brutes, equipped with an array of weapons able to be deployed at a moment’s notice.

“That’s a concern,” Lee said. “But the robots are not terminators. Their job is not cracking down on violent prisoners. They are helpers. When an inmate is in a life-threatening situation or seriously ill, he or she can reach out for help quickly.”

In fact, according to Lee, his team are currently finishing off building the robots, taking special care to make them look “humane and friendly.”

And it’s not just Korean prisons where robots have been put to work. Late last year, schools in the country began testing out teacher-bots in classrooms. The rotund robots, which cost more than $1.3 million to develop, were designed to teach English to students.

New TV ad from Samsung makes fun of Apple devotees

Samsung's latest TV ad pokes fun at Apple devotees who line up outside the company's stores, some for days, whenever a new product is launched. It's the kind of ad that you just know will get a reaction - exactly what Samsung is hoping for.

The opening shot of the ad displays some text at the bottom of the screen: “New York, NY. 9 hours to go.”

Outside an Apple-looking store stands a line of people. They’re not waiting for a bus, so it must be the launch of Apple’s latest product they’re there for. And yes, in one of the windows of the store you can see a sign that says “It’s coming.”

If you think this is the beginning of a TV ad from Apple, think again. It’s actually a new Samsung ad for its Galaxy S II Android smartphone. The 60-second commercial (check it out below) evidently takes great pleasure in poking fun at diehard Apple fans – the kind of people that wait for days outside Apple stores prior to a product launch.

Cutting between lines of similar fashionable-looking types in various cities across the US, the first part of the ad comprises snippets of conversation between those waiting. “Guys, I’m so amped I could stay for three weeks,” one says, while another complains to a friend: “If it looks the same, how will people know I upgraded?”

Suddenly, the people in line are distracted by a person nearby using a smartphone that isn’t an iPhone. There’s something about the device that catches their eye. They call the person over. They notice the screen, which is “pretty massive.” “And it’s got 4G speed.”

The people in line seem impressed, until someone mentions it’s a Samsung device. “I could never get a Samsung, I’m creative,” says one guy waiting in line. “Dude, you’re a barista,” his friend reminds him.

It’s an ad that non-Apple fans will no doubt take great delight in watching, while Apple devotees, sensitive ones at least, may find it hard to sit through. Whether it’ll actually persuade anyone to go for a Galaxy S II over an iPhone 4S is another matter.

Last month the S II beat the iPhone 4 to win the smartphone of the year award at the annual T3 awards show held in the UK.

RIM’s PlayBook cut to $199 for holiday season – now will it sell?

For the holiday season at least, the price of RIM's PlayBook tablet has been slashed to $199. That's the same as Amazon's Kindle Fire. Which one would you go for?

Research In Motion announced via Twitter this week that for a limited time only, its BlackBerry 16GB PlayBook tablet will be selling for $199. When it was launched in April it cost $499.

The tablet will be available for the new price at Best Buy, Wireless Giant, Office Depot, Radio Shack and Walmart, although at the time of writing only Best Buy was listing it for $199. There’s no word on when the offer will end (let alone begin).

According to the Wall Street Journal, some analysts believe that, as with Amazon’s recently released $199 Kindle Fire device, the new low price of the PlayBook means RIM will be selling it at a loss, “based on the costs of components and manufacturing.”

Amazon plans to recoup those losses through sales in its online store, to which the Fire is connected. RIM, on the other hand, will probably just be happy to shift a few of its devices, which have so far failed to gain any traction with tablet buyers.

The Ontario-based company sold half a million PlayBooks in the first three months following its launch, though this dropped to just 200,000 in its most recent quarter. Apple, in contrast, said it sold 11 million iPads in its most recent quarter.

The PlayBook received mixed reviews when it was unveiled earlier this year. It was criticized for lacking a native email client and instant messaging app, and though it was hoped these issues would soon be addressed by a long-awaited OS update, RIM recently announced that it was postponing the release of the update until early next year.

On top of that, its BlackBerry App World store is poorly stocked compared to rivals such as Apple’s App Store and Android Market.

In six months the PlayBook has failed to make an impact in the tablet market, though the company has stuck by it, with co-chief executive Jim Balsillie saying only last month that RIM was still 100 percent committed to the struggling device.

If, however, RIM fails to shift any at this latest price, there may be only one thing for it. Remember what happened to the Hewlett-Packard’s TouchPad?

Nokia Siemens to lay off 23 pct of workers

Mobile technology manufacturer Nokia Siemens has announced a massive restructuring that will see 17,000 employees lose their jobs by the end of 2013.

Nokia Siemens Networks has announced the company plans to cut some 17,000 jobs—about 23 percent of its global workforce—by the end of 2103 in a move to cut the company’s expenses by more than €1 billion (about US$1.35 billion). Although the company hasn’t released many details of its plan, it says in addition to job cuts, it will beging to outsource services and undergo a “significant reduction” of suppliers in order to reduce costs, while reducing its focus to emphasize mobile broadband technologies

“We believe that the future of our industry is in mobile broadband and services—and we aim to be an undisputed leader in these areas,” said Nokia-Siemens CEO Rajeev Suri, in a statement. “At the same time, we need to take the necessary steps to maintain long term competitiveness and improve profitability in a challenging telecommunications market.”

Nokia-Siemens currently has about 74,000 employees in 150 countries.

The 50-50 joint venture between Finland’s Nokia and Germany’s Siemens was formed in 2006, and is the world’s second-largest maker of mobile infrastructure gear: they don’t make phones, but they make the gear that goes into cell towers and signal processing, in addition to network backhauls, emergency services gear, and serious networking infrastructure. The company also provides a wide selection of consulting and managed services. However, instead of turning into a cash-generating juggernaut, Nokia-Siemens has struggled to generate profits, particular in the wake of the global economic downturn. Nokia-Siemens is also seeing fierce competition from Asian rivals like ZTE and Huawei, which have flooded the market with less expensive gear.

Sphero robo-ball: the smart ball you control with your smartphone

This robotic ball is controlled via your smartphone and comes with a host of apps, with more on the way, that keeps the fun rolling.

Not since sixteenth century Mexico and the invention of the brilliant, yet simple, ball in a cup has the traditional ball gone through such an evolution. However, it looks like the modern day ball is aiming to take that leap in technology even further thanks to Orbotix and its versatile Sphero robotic ball.

Part ball, part robot, Sphero is a translucent white ball that you control with your smartphone via Bluetooth. But don’t let the simple ball shape fool you, it’s so much more. Once connected to your smarphone (either Android or iOS) you can download and install apps that allow you to really interact with Sphero in many different ways: from a drawing app that has the ball following a line you sketch onscreen, to a golfing app that utilizes your phone like a virtual putting wedge, but don’t worry about water hazards because Sphero is also waterproof, so taking the fun to a pool or the beach is a snap.

Want your Sphero to stand out from the sea of others, or maybe you just want to play with the cool color changing app? Well, you can because Spero even light up thanks to an internal LED, which is perfect for some glowing nighttime fun. Plus, Orbotix is aiming to let third-party developers develop new apps for its API, which will hopefully keep the ball (and fun) rolling.

Croatian company hoping you will bow before DOK-ING XD, zero emissions EV

Croatian company DOK-ING is hoping to make a big splash with its in-house designed all electric car, the DOK-ING XD.

The LA Auto show sees a lot of really amazing autos each and every year from your veritable list of Audis, BMWs and the like. So it’s quite the accomplishment when a small automaker, let alone one that isn’t even really a car company, stands out among the rest.

But that is exactly what DOK-ING — the 20-year old Croatian company with a pedigree in robotics, mining, and firefighting equipment is doing with its DOK-ING XD all electric cars. Capable of traveling distances of 250 km or roughly 155 miles on a single charge thanks to its four 45 kW electric motors, the three seater XD can reach 0 to 60 in 7.7 seconds and max speeds of 86 mph. Charging the vehicle takes about three to eight hours and will feature enveloping 360 degree airbags for advanced safety, as well as a sport, comfort, or economy drive modes.

Entering the world of electric automaking certainly isn’t easy, what with all the EVs coming to market now or in the near future, but the all electric DOK-ING XD is taking a slightly different approach by manufacturing its XD via personal order or through a small production batches.

Since it is still only being shown in prototype form at the LA Auto Show, no definitive word on pricing or availability date has been given yet.

China moves ahead of US in smartphone shipments

China has replaced the US for the first time to become the world's largest smartphone market, according to data from the third quarter.

China pushed ahead of the US for the first time in terms of the number of smartphone shipments, with a total of 23.9 million devices being delivered to operators in the country during the third quarter, compared to 23.3 million in the US.

Data from research firm Strategy Analytics showed that in China smartphone shipments increased by a sizable 58 percent over the previous quarter, whereas in the US they fell by 7 percent.

Strategy Analytics director Tom Kang pointed to the wider availability of smartphones in retail channels, aggressive subsidizing by providers of high-end phones such as Apple’s iPhone and the emergence of low-cost Android models as reasons for the rapid growth in China’s smartphone market.

Nokia currently enjoys the biggest share of the country’s smartphone market, with 29 percent of all sales in the third quarter, though both Samsung and Apple are threatening the Finnish company’s dominance.

If Apple can strike a deal with China Mobile, the largest carrier on the planet with more than 600 million subscribers, expect the Cupertino company to make significant inroads in the market. China Mobile and Apple are currently in talks over a possible deal.

In the meantime, China Telecom could release the iPhone 4S in the early part of next year, which would also boost Apple’s share of the market in the Asian country. China Unicom, the second biggest carrier in China, is currently the only iPhone carrier in the country.

Strategy Analytics executive director Neil Mawston commented on the company’s findings, saying, “China is now at the forefront of the worldwide mobile computing boom.”

He continued, “China has become a large and growing smartphone market that no hardware vendor, component maker or content developer can afford to ignore.”
